Your world. Your imagination.

Second Life® is a free 3D virtual world and original metaverse where users can create, connect, and chat with others from anywhere.

Second Life, created in 2003 by Linden Lab founder Philip Rosedale, has evolved into one of the largest and most successful 3D virtual worlds, providing ‘residents’ the opportunity to enhance and augment their physical lives by connecting them to thousands of engaging and vibrant virtual environments and communities.

It’s a 3D virtual world you access via a viewer (client software), you explore regions (“sims”), interact with other people (avatars), and inhabit spaces you or others build.

  1. It’s user-driven: much of what you’ll see, wear, build, or use is made by residents themselves.

  2. It has a virtual economy: people buy, sell, rent, and trade virtual land, objects, and services. Some actually make real money (via the Linden Currency Market Exchange).

  3. It’s “open‐ended”: there’s no forced path, no set missions or goals. You decide what you want to do (socialize, build, run a business, roleplay, etc.).

  4. Because it’s not branded as a “game,” the idea is more about platform / world / medium rather than gamified mechanics.
